It seamlessly blends natural beauty with rapid industrial development, making it a highly desirable place to live and work.
Ancient Roots and Strategic Importance: The history of Thane dates back to ancient times. Its earliest mention can be found in the works of Greek philosopher Ptolemy (150 AD), who referred to a place near Thane Creek as “Chersonesus.” Venetian traveler Marco Polo also described Thane as a thriving kingdom with well-developed ports and bustling trade, indicating its strong trade relations with Europe, Greece, Babylon, and Persia. Historically, Thane was known as “Shreesthanak” and served as the capital of the Shilahar dynasty for nearly 400 years.
Portuguese and Maratha Eras: From 1535 to 1739, parts of Thane, including Vasai, were under Portuguese control. During this period, Thane’s shipbuilding industry flourished, utilizing timber from Vasai to construct fleets for voyages to Europe and Mecca. However, after a prolonged siege led by the Maratha general Chimaji Appa, the Marathas took control in 1739. Vasai remained under Maratha rule until 1802 when the Treaty of Vasai handed it over to the British.
British Rule and Post-Independence Growth: Thane prospered under British rule due to trade expansion and became an important part of the Bombay Presidency. After India gained independence in 1947, Thane continued its growth and officially became part of the Maharashtra state in May 1960.
