Saharsa, Bihar: A Glimpse into its History and Significance
Saharsa, a district located in the northern part of Bihar, was formed on April 1, 1954, from parts of the Bhagalpur and Purnea districts. It is centrally located in the Kosi Division and its history and geography are deeply influenced by the unpredictable Kosi River, often called the “Sorrow of Bihar.”
Historically, the region that now constitutes Saharsa was part of the ancient Mithila Kingdom, a significant center of learning and culture. It has been influenced by various powerful dynasties, including the Pala Empire. The area has traditionally been rich in agricultural production, benefiting from the Kosi’s fertile alluvial deposits, even while enduring its floods.
The name “Saharsa” is believed to have originated from “Sahars”, signifying “thousands of places,” possibly due to its vast and diverse landscape. During the medieval period and British Raj, Saharsa served as a crucial agricultural and administrative center for the Kosi region.
Today, Saharsa is a prominent agricultural district, with maize, paddy, and wheat being major crops. It is also an important administrative and educational hub, serving as the headquarters of the Kosi Division and home to the Koshi College. The district’s development is closely tied to flood management projects and the ongoing efforts to tame the Kosi River, which have brought increasing stability and prosperity to the region. Saharsa continues to be a vibrant part of Bihar, blending its agricultural backbone with growing urban facilities and educational opportunities.
