Malda, also spelled Maldah or Maldaha, is a district in West Bengal, India, strategically located as the “Gateway of North Bengal.” It lies on the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers and is steeped in a rich and complex history, once serving as the capital of ancient Bengal’s powerful kingdoms.
Historical Significance and Ancient Capitals:
- Ancient Roots: The region of Malda was historically part of the ancient kingdoms of Gour (Gauḍa) and Pandua (Pundrabardhana), which served as capitals of Bengal during various periods. Panini mentioned a city name Gourpura, identifiable with the ancient city of Gouda, whose ruins are spread across the district.
- Dynastic Rule: Malda has witnessed the rule of numerous powerful dynasties, leaving behind a rich architectural and cultural legacy.
- Mauryan Empire: Parts of Gour and Pundrabardhana were within the Mauryan Empire, evidenced by inscriptions. Hiuen Tsang noted Asokan stupas at Pundrabardhana.
- Pala Dynasty (8th-11th Century AD): A period of Buddhist flourishing, with major monastic centers like Jagadalla Vihara.
