More than just a city, Kolkata is an emotion, a living testament to India’s dynamic history.
The Rise of British Calcutta: The modern history of Kolkata officially began in 1690 with the arrival of Job Charnock, an agent of the British East India Company, at Sutanuti (one of the three villages that formed early Kolkata). He is often credited with founding the city, though the Calcutta High Court later ruled that Kolkata has no single founder and its genesis lies in the confluence of various historical events. The three villages – Sutanuti, Gobindapur, and Kolikata (from which Kolkata derives its name, possibly from “Kali Kshetra,” meaning the “ground of the Goddess Kali”) – were granted to the East India Company by the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar in 1698.
