• Later, under the remarkable rule of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar (mid-18th century), Indore, though her primary capital shifted to Maheshwar, continued to flourish as a significant trading post. She was a just and wise ruler, known for her administrative prowess and patronage of public works.
• The city further developed under subsequent Holkar rulers, becoming a major center for cotton textiles and opium trade. The Lal Bagh Palace, a grand European-style palace, built by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, showcases the opulence of the later Holkar period.

Indore remained a prominent princely state under British paramountcy until India’s independence, after which it became part of the new state of Madhya Bharat (later integrated into Madhya Pradesh).
