Bengaluru, often called the “Silicon Valley of India” and the “Garden City,” is the capital and largest city of Karnataka. It’s a vibrant metropolis renowned for its thriving IT industry, pleasant climate, diverse culture, and a fascinating blend of historical roots and modern innovation.
A Glimpse into Bengaluru’s Past:
The earliest recorded reference to Bengaluru dates back to 890 AD, found in a Ganga dynasty inscription. However, the city as we know it was formally founded in 1537 AD by Kempe Gowda I, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire. He built a mud fort, established the city’s first markets (Dodpete, Chikpete), and laid out its basic infrastructure, including several temples and tanks.
Over the centuries, Bengaluru witnessed the rule of various powerful dynasties and empires:
- Marathas: The city came under Maratha rule in the 17th century.
- Mughals: It was then acquired by the Mughals, who later leased it to the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore.
- Wodeyars and Tipu Sultan: Under the Wodeyars, and subsequently Tipu Sultan (the “Tiger of Mysore”), Bengaluru continued to grow as a strategic and commercial center. Tipu Sultan notably expanded the fort and developed botanical gardens.
- British Influence: In the 19th century, Bengaluru came under British control. Its pleasant climate led to its development as a cantonment town, attracting a large number of British residents. This period saw the establishment of numerous parks, broad avenues, and educational institutions, earning it the moniker “Garden City.” The establishment of scientific and research institutions during this era laid the foundation for its future as a technology hub.
Post-independence, particularly from the 1980s onwards, Bengaluru rapidly transformed into a global IT and software services powerhouse, attracting major multinational corporations and skilled professionals from across India and the world.
