Bathinda, often called the “Heart of Malwa,” is a historically rich and agriculturally significant city in southwestern Punjab. It’s a fascinating blend of ancient heritage, spiritual sanctity, and burgeoning industrial and educational development.
A Glimpse into Bathinda’s Past:
Bathinda’s history is ancient and deeply intertwined with various rulers and empires. Historically known as “Tabarhindh” or “Bikramgarh,” its strategic location made it a crucial gateway into India from the northwest.
The most iconic historical landmark is Qila Mubarak, a massive and ancient fort that stands as a testament to the city’s long and often tumultuous past. Believed to have been built as early as the 2nd century CE during the Kushan period, it’s one of the oldest and highest small brick forts in India. This fort holds immense historical significance:
- It was a vital strategic point and was repeatedly besieged and captured by various invaders, including Mahmud of Ghazni and Muhammad of Ghor.
- Notably, Razia Sultan, the first female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, was imprisoned here after her rebellion.
- Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, also visited this fort in 1707 AD, adding to its religious importance.
The region also has strong ties to Sikh history. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo, near Bathinda, is one of the five Takhts (seats of authority) of Sikhism. It was here that Guru Gobind Singh rested after fierce battles and re-dictated the Adi Granth (the holy scripture). This place is also revered as “Guru-ki-Kashi” due to its significance as a center of Sikh learning.
In 1754, Bathinda became part of the princely state of Patiala until India’s independence, further shaping its cultural and administrative identity.
