Ancient Origins and Mythological Connections: The history of Amravati dates back to ancient times. Legends connect the city to the epic Mahabharata, suggesting it was part of the Vidarbha kingdom, the maternal home of Rukmini, Lord Krishna’s chief queen. Archaeological findings in and around Amravati hint at early settlements and prosperous trade routes that passed through the region.
Buddhist Influence: Amravati was also a prominent center of Buddhism. The nearby town of Dhamma in Amravati district is home to ancient Buddhist stupas and Viharas, indicating a strong Buddhist presence in the region during the Maurya and Satavahana periods. British Administration and Modern Development: During the British Raj, Amravati became a significant administrative and educational center in the Berar province. The British developed infrastructure, including railways and educational institutions, which laid the foundation for modern Amravati.
Post-Independence Growth: After India gained independence, Amravati became part of the state of Bombay and later, in 1960, a crucial city in the newly formed state of Maharashtra.
