Dakshin Dinajpur (South Dinajpur) is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal, with its headquarters at Balurghat. Formed on April 1, 1992, by the bifurcation of the erstwhile West Dinajpur district, it is characterized by its predominantly agricultural landscape, crisscrossed by rivers, and shares a significant border with Bangladesh.
Historical Context and Formation: The region of Dinajpur has a long and varied history. During the Mughal Emperor Akbar’s reign (1585 AD), the district was likely governed by the Sarkars of Tajpur and Panjara, with the first authentic traces of the Dinajpur zamindari family emerging around this time. At the time of India’s partition in 1947, the original Dinajpur District was divided into West Dinajpur (in India) and East Dinajpur (which became part of East Pakistan, now Bangladesh). West Dinajpur was further enlarged in 1956 with the addition of some areas from Bihar, finally leading to its bifurcation into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur in 1992. The district is drained by several north-south flowing rivers like Atreyee, Punarbhaba, Tangon, and Brahmani.
Economy: An Agrarian Heartland: Dakshin Dinajpur is primarily an agricultural district. The fertile alluvial soil, enriched by annual river floods, supports extensive cultivation, allowing for double and even multiple cropping. Rice and jute are major crops. While large-scale industrial development has been slow, there are efforts to promote small and medium-scale enterprises. The district also has some modern rice mills and an oil solvent plant. Forestry and minor forest produce, particularly along the border with Bangladesh, contribute to the local economy. Fishing is another important activity, as are traditional crafts like handloom weaving and Dhokra items made from jute twines.
