Historically, the region of Singhbhum (of which East Singhbhum is a part) was inhabited by various indigenous tribes, notably the Ho, Santhal, and Munda communities, who maintained their distinct cultural practices and administrative systems. The most defining period in East Singhbhum’s history began in the early 20th century with the vision of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. Recognizing the rich mineral resources, particularly iron ore, in the region, he established the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), now Tata Steel, in 1907 at a place that would later be named Jamshedpur. This marked the dawn of India’s organized industrialization. Jamshedpur rapidly grew from a village into a planned industrial city, attracting people from across the country, making it a melting pot of cultures.
During the British colonial period, the Singhbhum region was strategically important for its minerals and forests. Post-independence, with the continued growth of Tata Steel and the establishment of other industries, East Singhbhum solidified its position as a major industrial and economic powerhouse. In 2000, it became an integral district of the newly formed state of Jharkhand.
