Kishanganj, Bihar: A Glimpse into its History and Unique Geography

Kishanganj, located in the extreme northeastern part of Bihar, is a district with a distinct geographical and cultural identity. It was established as a separate district on 14th January 1990, by separating from the larger Purnea district. Its unique position as the only tea-growing district in Bihar, along with its borders touching West Bengal and Bangladesh, gives it a diverse character.

Historically, Kishanganj was part of the ancient Anga Mahajanapada and later came under various regional powers and empires that controlled the Bengal and Bihar plains. Its location on crucial trade routes to the Northeast and East Asia made it strategically important for centuries. During the Mughal period, the area was known for its administrative and revenue collection points.

The name “Kishanganj” is said to have been derived from Kishoreganj, after a local dignitary named Kishore. It was a significant trade center during the British Raj due to its connectivity and agricultural produce.

Today, Kishanganj is famous for its tea plantations, which thrive due to the specific climate and soil conditions. Besides tea, jute and paddy are also major crops. The district is characterized by its secular fabric, with a significant Muslim population, and a vibrant blend of local cultures. Its proximity to three international borders makes it a unique point of cultural exchange and economic activity, even as it continues to develop its infrastructure and social services.
