Katihar, Bihar: A Glimpse into its History and Significance

Katihar, a prominent district in the northeastern part of Bihar, was formed on October 2, 1973, by separating from the larger Purnea district. Its strategic location at the confluence of several rivers, including the Ganga, Kosi, and Mahananda, has historically made it an important center for trade and communication.

The history of Katihar is deeply connected to the larger history of the Kosi region and Purnea. It was historically a part of the ancient Anga Mahajanapada and later came under the rule of various powerful empires and regional kingdoms, including the Palas, Sens, and the Mughals. During the British Raj, Katihar gained prominence primarily due to its development as a significant railway junction. The broad gauge and meter gauge lines connected it to various parts of Bengal and other regions, facilitating trade, especially in jute and agricultural produce.

The name “Katihar” itself is believed to have originated from “Katiyar,” a tribe that inhabited the area, or from “Katta-har,” referring to the cutting of the Katta tree.

Today, Katihar remains a vital railway hub and a significant agricultural market. It is known for its jute production, maize, and rice. The district plays a crucial role in connecting different parts of North-East India with the rest of the country. Despite its urban growth, Katihar retains its cultural roots, influenced by both Maithili and Angika cultures, offering a unique blend of traditions.
