Bhojpur district, with its headquarters in Arrah, is a region of immense historical and cultural significance in Bihar. Formed on 10th November 1972, by bifurcating the former Shahabad district, Bhojpur derives its name from the legendary King Bhoja of the Parmar dynasty, though its history intertwines with various powerful kingdoms and empires of ancient and medieval India.
The region’s history dates back to the Vedic period. It was part of the ancient Magadh Mahajanapada and later came under the rule of the Mauryas, Guptas, and Palas. However, Bhojpur truly rose to prominence during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, when it became a crucial center of rebellion led by the revered Kunwar Singh. His heroic resistance against the British East India Company is a defining chapter in India’s freedom struggle, making Arrah and Bhojpur synonymous with patriotism and bravery.
Bhojpur is also known for its strong Bhojpuri culture and language, which is spoken by millions across the world and has a vibrant tradition of folk music, dance, and literature.
