It’s a charming metropolis characterized by its lush greenery, a unique blend of old-world Nawabi (princely) charm, and modern urban development, making it one of India’s greenest cities.
A Glimpse into Bhopal’s Past:
The origins of Bhopal are ancient, with legends linking it to King Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty (11th century), who is credited with creating the Upper Lake, a prominent feature of the city. However, the modern city of Bhopal was founded by Dost Mohammad Khan (an Afghan soldier in the Mughal army) in 1707 AD. He established the princely state of Bhopal by conquering surrounding territories and building a fort at Fatehgarh.
One of the most unique aspects of Bhopal’s history is the rule of four successive Begums (female rulers) from 1819 to 1926. These progressive queens brought about significant reforms and development, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s architecture, public works, and social fabric. Their contributions include:
- Taj-ul-Masajid: One of the largest mosques in India, its construction was initiated by Begum Shah Jahan.
- Gohar Mahal: A beautiful palace built by Qudsia Begum, showcasing a blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture.
- Sultan-ul-Masajid: Another grand mosque.
- Various schools, hospitals, railways, and waterworks that modernized the city.
Bhopal remained a prominent princely state until its accession to the Indian Union after independence. Its culture reflects a rich tapestry of Afghan, Mughal, and Hindu influences, visible in its cuisine, architecture, and daily life. The city, unfortunately, also gained global attention due to the tragic Bhopal Gas Tragedy in 1984, a devastating industrial disaster.
