A Journey Through Amritsar’s Past:
The origins of Amritsar are deeply intertwined with Sikhism. The city was founded in 1574 AD by Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru. He initiated the digging of the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar), around which the city grew. His son and successor, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, played a pivotal role in the city’s development, completing the holy tank and constructing the magnificent Harmandir Sahib in its center in 1604 AD, thereby cementing Amritsar’s status as the holiest pilgrimage site for Sikhs worldwide.
Amritsar truly flourished under the dynamic leadership of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (early 19th century), often revered as the “Lion of Punjab.” He transformed Amritsar into a prominent commercial and cultural hub of his vast Sikh Empire. His most notable contribution to the city was the embellishment of the Harmandir Sahib with pure gold leaf and marble, giving it the awe-inspiring “Golden Temple” appearance it holds today. During his reign, the city was fortified, and infrastructure development boosted its prosperity.
However, Amritsar’s history also bears the scars of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919, a tragic event where peaceful Indian protestors were fired upon by British forces. This solemn memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during India’s struggle for independence. Post-partition in 1947, Amritsar, being a border city, witnessed immense upheaval but resiliently rebuilt itself, becoming a symbol of perseverance and unity.
